Chilled Water Primary Secondary Design. Flow head loss in distribution mains from production plant to point of connection. If the flow rate in the secondary side is low then some chilled water will flow into the secondary and some will recirculate back to the chillers.

When secondary flow exceeds primary flow The primary side of the system is usually confined to the central plant, where chillers and pumps are looped together, while the secondary loop distributes the chilled water to outlying buildings and the respective tertiary loop circulates chilled water. Now, let's assume that the total cooling demand is 4000 gpm (~1650 rt).

This scheme divides the chiller water system into two distinct loops, primary and secondary, hydraulically separated by a neutral bridge. Design to “deep” primary circuit temperature drops with corresponding reductions in primary pump and pipe size. Obviously, there is an energy penalty associated with the extra flow through the primary loop and a lower entering chilled water return temperature to the chillers, but at least the load is satisfied. In this design, the primary chilled water pumps after the first and second stage heat exchangers and their associated fittings in the original design are eliminated, and the secondary chilled water pumps in the original design are functioned as the variable primary pumps.
